Feeling good in 2014

So far the year is off to a good start. I was not feeling great about my car even after my lackluster test-drive of the 2013 Honda Civic, so I bought a Consumer Reports car review magazine at my grocery store and studied the recommendations for small sedans. I liked what they said about the 2013 Hyundai Elantra, and there was a 0% financing offer available, so I did some price research with TrueCar, including getting a quote for a fully-loaded model. The quote turned out to be from a dealership 80 miles away, so I found one closer to home and took my quote with me in my email for negotiating, just in case.

I ended up loving the car after the test drive, and was able to negotiate a good price, so I bought the car on December 30. I was glad I did, because on New Year's Eve, we got snow. We were scheduled to go to a party in Luna Pier, MI, and I didn't want to miss it. I had a cute dress to wear and my friend there always throws fun parties. My husband and I had a lot of fun, and even though the weather was crummy, I felt safe driving my new little car. One thing I had never thought about in my keep the old car/buy a new one debate is that the new headlights do a better job of lighting up the roadway. I also didn't know how much better it was to drive a car with traction control. I think I will be much safer this winter. I will have a car payment, which is a bummer, but it was going to be now or in a few months.  My other car wasn't going to get me through much longer without another major repair.

Rang in 2014 in a sparkly silver dress from Gwynnie Bee

I loved the dress, and I used instructions from BeautyGeeks to make my hair a little more party-ready than usual. I wore glitzy makeup too -- why not? I never really used to like to call too much attention to myself, because I didn't feel pretty enough to want to stand out.  I'm starting to realize at 43, I had better appreciate the looks I have -- this might be as good as it gets!

Today is day one of my resolution to log all of my food, and I'm doing well with it so far. I think one thing that always hung me up was not being able to find a perfect match in the database for something I had. I'm going to just find the best match I can, and call it good enough.

Hope you are having a happy 2014 so far. Tomorrow I am going to go in to the office to try to get some work done. I hope the roads are plowed by then -- we are supposed to get even more snow.

    1. Thank you! The dress was fun, but very scratchy! I was happy to have something fun to wear for NYE, and just as happy to send it back to Gwynnie Bee. I definitely wouldn't have bought something like that, since I would never get enough use out of it.

    2. I ordered two dresses for youngest that had sequined tops. One was NON-itchy. We had it shortened, added straps, it is great and she will be able to wear it at 15 (now) or 35, timeless style.

The second dress itched like crazy. It was a similar cut and the same designer I think, but the top edge of the bodice drove her nuts even for a few minutes trying it. We returned that one. Too bad because it was very cute and timeless also, but no point in having an uncomfortable dress.

    3. I have other sequined tops that are not scratchy -- I guess it depends on the size and type of sequins. Like you said, it doesn't matter how good the dress looks if you can't stand to wear it.

  5. Glad you found a car. Middle had a two hour drive home on Wednesday (snow) youngest was with her. And then she had to go back to college on Thursday (more snow). She did fine both times, but people were on standby at both ends of her trip to go get her if she had trouble. I felt much better with her in a new car for all the reasons you mentioned.

Dress and pic are darling. How fun you got to really glitz up for a party.

Are you finding yourself wearing a lot more dresses with your clothes program? It seems like you might be. I have a vague memory that you were not wearing dresses regularly a few years ago.

You look truly fabulous in all your pics.
